Not quite. If you're loading a set of maps, you can't do this with the car running. You *can* tweak individual values, such as fuel and timing in real time, with the car running (for example on the dyno).

Your suspicion is correct. That's not how it works. The ZEM is nothing more than an emulator that takes the place of the EPROM in your ECU. The emulator is always live, since it's taking the place of the chip. But it acts standalone and doesn't require a computer to be hooked up to it full time.
